Interactive Case: Thyroid Nodule
A guided walkthrough of a benign thyroid aspirate.
Clinical History
A 73-year-old woman with an incidental 1.7 cm left thyroid nodule found on imaging. A fine-needle aspiration was performed.
Step 1: Background Population
What cell type makes up the predominant background population in this smear?
Final Diagnosis: Benign Thyroid Nodule (Bethesda II)
These findings are consistent with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis).
The diagnosis is established by the presence of a prominent lymphocytic infiltrate, sheets of benign Hürthle cells, and background colloid. Therefore, the nodule is categorized as Bethesda Category II (Benign).
